Story House Apartment
The Storyhouse is full of stories from its own beginnings to the stories told in the library books housed there. It’s a multi-purpose, multi-layered library converted from a 1930s Odeon Art Deco building and includes an 800-seat auditorium, story-telling room, 150-seat studio theatre, café/ restaurant, archive/local history area, two bars and a 100-seat independent cinema.
As part of the future plans for the Northgate development where the Storyhouse is located , a proposal for a new building to house apartments for visitors coming to the city to work for a short periods of time at the Storyhouse. This may include actors, producers, and those working on the theatre sets for example. When not in use, they could be rented out as short stay holiday apartments.
The new building will conveniently house 28 one bed apartments. Whilst the building will contain some basic communal facilities, each apartment is to be a self-contained unit. The occupant of the apartment needs somewhere to sleep, make food, eat, work and relax. In particular, reading, is likely to be an important and perhaps central activity.
This project looks for imaginative solutions for a typical apartment. With space being a key constraint, these are small apartments and therefore the effective and imaginative use of space is key.
